SAG Awards: "Conclave" and Timothée Chalamet surprise
The film ' Conclave ', about the board of cardinals who meet to elect the new pope, surprised on Sunday by winning the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards in Hollywood, on a night in which Timothée Chalamet took home the award for best actor.
"We recognise the supreme importance of community in our work and in the world (...) that's what we're celebrating today," said Ralph Fiennes upon accepting the award for best ensemble cast.
The result of this gala adds its grain of sand to the atmosphere of uncertainty that has characterized this awards season , which will end on March 2 when the Oscars are presented.
' Conclave ' by Edward Berger beat 'Anora' by Sean Baker, which had already been crowned best film at awards such as the Critics Choice Awards, the Spirit Awards or the awards given by the Hollywood Producers Guild, as well as 'Wicked', 'The Brutalist' or 'Emilia Pérez'.
Timothée Chalamet, meanwhile, made an impact by winning the award for best actor for his work in 'A Complete Unknown', in which he played musical legend Bob Dylan.
"I'm inspired by the greats (...) I'm inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis. Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps and I want to be up there (...) This (award) doesn't mean that but it's a little more fuel to keep going," said the actor.
Demi Moore took the best actress award for horror film "The Substance," which also earned her a Golden Globe in January, beating out tough contender and Critics Choice Award winner Mikey Madison of "Anora."
The gala , which was accompanied by minor production problems, also awarded some predictable favorites such as actress Zoe Saldana , who moved one step closer to the Oscar after winning the award for best supporting actress for 'Emilia Perez'.
"I'm proud to be part of a union that allows me to be who I am, that has never questioned where I come from or judged me for how I speak or what my pronouns are. I believe that everyone has the right to be who they are, and Emilia Perez is about truth and love," said the actress.
While Kieran Culkin received the same recognition in the male category for his work in 'A Real Pain'.
Political speeches
Activist and actress Jane Fonda gave a political touch to the gala , referring, without mentioning names, to the hostile environment that the Donald Trump administration is creating for workers.
"Being empathetic is not synonymous with weakness or following a trend , and, to be honest, being 'woke' simply means caring about others," said the actress amid constant criticism from the President's government towards ' woke ' (progressive) positions.
Union President Fran Drescher also spoke about the devastating fires that burned in Los Angeles in January and left nearly thirty dead, with a message in which she advocated for the environment.
"Wake up, humans. We cannot allow greed to continue to deny global warming," Drescher said, likely alluding to Trump's refusal to acknowledge the phenomenon .
' Shogun ' continues to sweep and ' Only Murders in the Building' prevailsThe television sections of the gala also had some surprises :
Selena Gomez took the stage to accept the award for best ensemble cast in a comedy series for ' Only Murders In the Building' and Martin Short beat out Jeremy Allen White for best actor in a comedy series for the production.
Colin Farrell won best actor in a limited series for "The Penguin" and Jean Smart won best comedy actress for "Hacks."
However, ' Shogun ' continued to lead the awards by taking home best ensemble cast in a drama series, best actor for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai for best actress.
The 2025 awards season will come to an end on March 2 when the Hollywood Academy presents the prestigious Oscars at a gala to be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
